Composite development is very iterative process where engineering data reciprocated in between various engineering tools. The accuracy of this data translation dictates product quality. When it comes to data translation from CAD to CAE/CAM for composite geometry, process is complicated in comparison with solid geometry. Composite data includes surface on which composite designed, plies, material, orientation, darts etc.
Any change implemented in Composite geometry in CAD or CAE tools needs similar changes to be reflected in its corresponding tools so that consistency can be maintained. So as to make this data translation efficient DASSAULT SYSTEMES has developed tool COMPOSITE LINK. Composite link allow composite data translation in between CATIA V5 and leading CAE tools.
Composite Link allows to export composite data in .layup, .hd5 or ABAQUS format. This export contains tessellated surface on which composite data exist, mesh if composite V5 part is meshed in CATIA V5, Composite Material defined in CATIA V5, Ply geometry, Material and orientation. This composite data export can be done either on ply group level or for complete stack.
Once composite data from CATIA V5 exported in .layup, .hd5 or ABAQUS format, it can be imported in all leading CAE tools. Most of the CAE tools will require Laminate Modeler add on. If simulation is going to be done in ABAQUS then .layup file can be directed imported in ABAQUS.
In CAE tool, composite data can be modified that includes modification in stack, no of plies, ply material, orientation, and ply geometry. When any of the above mentioned changes occurs in CAE tool, composite model in CAE differs from its source model in CATIA. In this case same composite link technology can be used to reflect similar changes in source model in CATIA.
CAE tools can export modified composite model in CAE tools again into .layup format by using composite modeler tools CAE. When this modified .layup file is imported into CATIA V5 source model, Composite link tool compares composite data in .layup file and source model. Composite Link pops up comparison window giving details of changes done on composite model in CAE tools. This comparison window gives option to users to accept or reject changes suggested/done within CAE tools. If all changes are accepted then CAE Composite data and CATIA Composite Model matches each other. If drapping simulation has been performed on Composite Model in CATIA then same data can be transferred to CAE model as well by making use of Composite Link technology.
Composite link technology saves lot of efforts required for make manual changes in composite model either in CATIA or in CAE tools. The process is very accurate as all changes in composite model are captured by neutral format .layup file. This two important advantages of composite link make it bridge in between two technologies
